I guess there has to be a first post, right? Right. So let’s talk about why we’re here and what we hope to accomplish on Another Means.
Why Should You Read Another Means?
I find that in our lives, my wife and I choose to do things just a little bit different than everyone else. Don’t get me wrong, we’re very normal, but we tend to run just a few degrees off of the life course that most people do. We’re here to share our story, to talk about some of the things we try and hopefully to inspire others to step just a bit outside the box of normal.
As I write this, the things we are most interested in and likely to talk most about on Another Means are personal finance, fitness, tech and fun hobbies.
Who Are We?
Right now, we’re going to stay anonymous. To be clear, we have nothing to hide, but as we start this journey of sharing a lot of stuff on Another Means, we’re not exactly sure we want our names, employers, or other personal details fully exposed. That may change someday, but for now, I’ll be “Sam” (short for “Signed Another Means”) and my wife will be “Mrs. Sam”.
In order to tell our story though, you do need to know a little bit about us, so here goes. We live on the east coast, near the ocean. We’re in our 40’s. I work full time in a corporate IT job and Mrs. Sam does freelance work of several varieties. We have two kids, one is in his early 20’s and one is in his late teens. We are nearly empty-nesters, but not quite. Our youngest son will probably need some more time to get launched on his own.
We play board games a lot and we have over 150 board games. We love to work out. Mrs. Sam and I wake up every day and do some LIIFT4 or yoga on Beach Body On Demand. We love to be outside. We often go to the local zip line park or the beach. We love to hike and to ride our bikes.
What Makes Us So Different?
Not much. Again, I don’t want to give the impression that we are “wildly different” than anyone else. However, Mrs. Sam and I tend not to have resistance to some things that others do and therefore we tend to experiment or live life just off-center from some of our family, friends and co-workers.
Some interesting things that we’ve done that you will hear about on Another Means:
- Sold our perfectly good, paid for family sedan to by a fully electric vehicle – and made $4,000 doing it
- Downsized our large single-family home to move to a smaller condo
- Quit drinking sodas completely for 5+ years
- Built a gym in our living room
- Rode my bike to work for a year in ice, snow and blazing hot summer
- Gone grocery shopping on our bicycles
- Paid off all of our consumer debt
- Attempted to save more than 50% of our income
- And lots more stuff…
See, not so strange. But we don’t see most of the other people in our lives doing this stuff and we often wonder why. Sometimes we tell people about these things and they say “What? I could never…” or “Why would you do that?”.
Anyway, we kind of enjoy trying new and different things. Another Means is an example of just that. No one I know personally runs a blog. This is my first blog. Heck, this will be the first time I’ve written consistently since school. I hope to use Another Means to journal our experiences so we have a record to look back on. I hope we use this as a way to share what we’ve tried, discuss what worked and what didn’t. I want to see what we stick to and what where we falter or change. I want Another Means to provide some value and inspiration to others and hopefully to learn from your perspectives and experiences.
Thanks for coming! We genuinely hope others find this content valuable and we look forward to sharing and discussing our journey!
